Spirit of Adventure August 25

Unread post by Whynd1 »

I am off in the morning on the Spirit of Adventure for a 10 night cruise Around Britain.

I have had my phone call from my Saga driver and he will be here at 8.45 am.

Hoping storm Erin doesn't impact too much as the majority of the ports are tender.

Take care everyone.

Despite it being bank holiday Monday we made good time down to Dover , arrived just about 3pm. Straight through security and hardly anyone at check in. Luggage arrived shortly after.
Met up with my friend.
Pre booked 2 speciality restaurants, Amalfi for tonight the first formal night and the Nepalese one for later in the cruise. Sea condition good.

Lerwick tomorrow.

Wednesday 27th Lerwick

A very foggy and misty morning, our 2 hr tour of Southern Shetland went ahead despite the mist. We did see some lovely scenery and as we got back the sun came out, currently sat on the balcony typing this.

Last night had a superb dinner in Amalfi the Italian restaurant. The beef fillet was exceptional and came with gorgonzola and walnut sauce. There was a Scottish country dancing class yesterday so that's so that's something different.

Stornoway tomorrow with a back up plan apparently if weather takes a dive.

Friday 29th August. Oban

Rain and rough seas overnight.
Captain tells us we will be missing the scenic cruising day and will be heading to the Isle of Man for Saturday instead of Sunday. Unsure if we will still anchor or be berthed.
Expecting rough seas, balcony furniture has been secured.

Ken Bruce is hosting his popmaster quiz tonight.

If it's any consolation Lindsey we've had rain here with more to come. And about time to.

Welcome to our island, Lindsey. As with the rest of the British Isles, I'm afraid the forecast is not too good but at least I see that you have berthed and won't need to tender. Enjoy your short stay - there are some decent indoor attractions when it rains this afternoon.

Later. Whoops, sorry, that's not you is it, that's The Corinthian, operated by Grand Circle Travel on berth. So, tender it is - might be a touch choppy :problem:

Tender operation did commence and I nearly made it to the pontoon when we were advised it was extremely choppy and would be worse coming back. So called it a day.
Shortly after that the Captain made a decision and suspended tendering and recalled the shore excursions.
We had already been advised that there would be no independent passengers today due to not knowing if they could keep the same tendering base ashore,as we're are a day early visiting Isle of Man.
Currently can't see anything due to fog, we will just be bobbing about till Belfast on Monday.
We are all being well looked after with a full afternoon of activities.

Sadly the weather has badly affected this cruise.

Sorry your visit to the Island was a failure, Lindsey. I hope you either get into Belfast early or find some shelter, forecast gale force 8 tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about the bad weather Lindsey. Unfortunately we are always at the mercy of the weather but you don't really expect it late summer.

We had bad weather the whole five days of our cruise round the south of England last July. Well not quite, we did manage one afternoon on the balcony. Unbelievable for that time of year. It felt more like October than mid summer.

Hope the weather perks up for you Lindsey.

Not too bad overnight, sun is out and we are pootling around the Isle of Arran before Belfast tomorrow.
No complaints here, we are being fed and watered and it's nice to relax.

Have booked for the Canaries in January.

Very good day in Belfast, I visited the Titanic museum, which was excellent.

Our call into Guernsey has been cancelled and we are now berthing tonight in Portland due to more bad weather. As I am typing this ut is very choppy.
Saga have arranged excursions for tomorrow with a 3hr tour which includes a visit to Chesil beach, trouble is more heavy rain forecast.

Glad you enjoyed Belfast Lindsey - I went on the hoho bus around Belfast didn’t get to the Titanic museum but heard it was very good. What a shame about Guernsey - hope Portland is fine for you.

Back home from a lovely cruise whic was badly hampered by bad weather. We ended up in Portland and Saga did put on an excursion. We didn't go as our time was 8.30am. Sailed at 4pm. Captain said he had strong winds making it difficult coming into Dover.

Next cruise is January down to the Canaries which was a deferred cruise from when my husband was taken ill.

Home to lots of post which required action.
