Leixoes, Oporto

Unread post by rita17 »

Wondered if anyone has used the tram to get from the port to Oporto. Last time we were there we used the shuttle and just had a walk round the city. Undecided whether to DIY or ship excursion at the moment. I think the Hoho bus also stops at the port when there's a cruise ship in port. Can anyone confirm this?

Well, we've just returned from our cruise on FO Braemar so I thought I'd let you know how we got to Oporto from Leixoes just in case anyone goes there. We were told that we were being docked at the North Dock instead of the South Dock as construction work was going on there, so this scuppered our plans of trying to get the tram. However, the number 507 bus stopped right outside the port gates and ran about every 20 minutes so we caught that. The journey was about 40/45 minutes and cost 1.80 euros each way. There were red, yellow and blue sightseeing buses there too and everyone we spoke to who had used them were pleased with the tour.

It in the P&O blurb that there is a shuttle at Leixoes.

Does this take us into Oporto proper?

The first time we went we used the shuttle which dropped us in the city right where all the HoHo buses and the Noddy train started from. This was with FO but I would imagine it woul be the same for P&O. The second time we went FO were charging £25 for Oporto on your own so opted to take the public transport. They were only giving you 3 hours there whereas we had about 5 hours.

It's a few years since we went Meg but from what I remember the shuttle dropped us off very close to the centre.

Hi Meg 50

The drop off point is Avenida Vimara Peres. Journey time is approx 20 minutes but may be slightly longer dependent on traffic. Make sure to check out Sao Bento Train Station with its beautiful wall tiles and then take a walk down to the river where you can take a one hour boat trip on the river and also visit the lodges for some free port samples.

That was my plan but we were only due to be in port for 5 hours and in Oporto for 4. In the event we couldn't dock anyway. It was described as a 'full day'.

Hi Meg 50

P & O appear to have changed the drop off point for the shuttle bus and it is now Rua Dr.Ferreira/Cordoaria which is near the Clerigos Tower. Oporto was one of our favorite ports but as Quizzical Bob said check how much time is available in port. Our last shuttle was 3.30pm leaving city centre and it is a bit of a walk from the river area up a steep hill to shuttle especially after a few free samples of port.
