I can't see the answer to this on the Cunard website: is it possible to cancel auto-tipping on Cunard ships as can be done with P&O?

As far as I'm aware .. yes you can but I only know from what others have said as we prefer to leave them on.

It says "If you wish to amend the charge in any way you can do so by contacting the Purser's Desk once on board."

Many thanks, Ken.

I would just point out that I'm asking on behalf of my sister and BIL, who are about to go on their first ever cruise.

A fellow passenger on our most recent sea cruise had personal knowledge of this aspect, he implied that the ' American way ' is to visit the Purser but that he / she will wish to investigate why one needs to remove the tip(s) and only for that particular day. The thinking being that there has been a service issue but one that could be corrected going forward.

Removing them for the entire cruise is not the norm but it can be done, however, we were also advised that a list of names with cabin numbers will be posted in the crew area on the penultimate day so that they have the opportunity to establish why a tip was not given / was lower than expectation if indeed this proves to be the case.

So ... it will be interesting to discover how they get on.

It will indeed, Moby. BIL's view is that he is paying enough for the cruise and shouldn't have to be "forced" into paying "the staff's wages"... At roughly £9.50 pppd for a 12-night cruise, it's going to work out a dear do, and one that he hadn't budgeted for. I must say, though, that $11.50 pppd does seem a bit steep, especially when P&O suggest £5.50 pppd.

That link that Ken kindly provided does indicate that you can remove the charge for the whole cruise.

You can - the last time we did it on Cunard was in June this year. We didn't get asked why, but had to sign a form. Our sole reason for removing them is that we never eat in the MDR, so tip those individuals with whom we have actual contact.

P&O is pitifully cheap regarding tips. I like to think we would tip more than £5.50 pp if staying in at a decent hotel between three meals and the chambermaid.

Couldn't agree more, Gill, but I've often heard tales of folk removing the auto-tip and handing the cabin steward and waiter a fiver and think they have been really generous !

Quite. Probably the same people who spend £100 in a restaurant and leave a couple of quid on the table

We met a trio on a 14-nighter, sharing a cabin (so the bunk bed was in use), who gave their cabin girl £5. The girl told them it wasn't enough.

Having just come back from a QM2 cruise I can confirm that the whole gratuities charge was deducted the day after we joined. What surprised us was that when each bill for drinks and services was tendered it had an additional Service Charge, and then another blank space to enable you to add a further gratuity.

She is a lovely ship, and the entertainment and services were excellent ( food in the MDR was nothing to write home about). I think we would go on her again after this experience. There were downsides but if I get time I will write a short cruise report so that others can see it from our point of view.

That's the norm Frank on US type ships ... a mere 18% is generally added, even for water, and an extra line is provided for you to raise the anti.

A right royal rip off but the drinks are usually of a generous size.

We thought the wine was considerably more expensive than on P&O in 2015. However a nice pre dinner gin and tonic always came with some appetiser snacks and they didn't skimp on them. i will do a report in the next couple of days.

The stewards were fine and didn't drop any hints for more than the std deduction.
