Free Wifi hotspots in ports

#1

Post by Mummykins »

Thought it might be useful if anyone knows of free wifi in different ports, especially as it is so expensive and slow on board. Only one I know is:

Stavanger, Norway: In the Museum, think its the Maritime, along the road by the quayside. You only have to pay to enter the museum but not in the shop where they sell souvenirs. They allow free use of some Apple computers and they also have free Wifi. They also speak excellent English and are very helpful.

I think a safe bet is to follow the staff, they know where they all are ;)

Good tip Wina - follow the staff - lots of the ports on Caribbean have free wifi - one that comes to my mind is St. Lucia - Point Seraphim shopping area - just sat and FaceTimed my sons at home - so easy. Many of the cafes have free wifi if you buy a drink. Incidentally last year when I visited ports in USA the wifi reception was very poor which I thought a bit strange.

Great tip Wina.

The ones which spring to mind where we have seen staff are..

1) Kristiansand, just off the ship, outside some dock buildings
2) Tallin, again just off the ship, at the end of the jetty
3) Lanzarote, outside a cafe between the harbour and the car park where the shuttle bus drops off.

And of course, Macdonalds wherever.

I used my Kindle 3G successfully in every port on our 21 day cruise. Totally free. Sat on deck, and read my emails.

I did try and log-on to the wi-fi of the adjoining Aida Blu, when we were in Tallin.

Darned well password protected though! :(

Just come back from 35 nights in the Caribbean and found this kind of info really useful as I resent buying an internet package onboard, not because of the price but because of the slowness. Anyway, from what I remember here are some hotspots

Madeira - in the pedestrianised area in the town close to the new location for the shuttle bus drop-off point.
Barbados - Really good signal in the terminal buildings
Antigua - In the street just as you leave the port, beside all the duty free shops.
St Lucia - in the Karaoke bar at the port.
Grenada, Torlola and Aruba - had to use cafes
Cozumel - at the exit of the shopping centre you have to walk through as you leave the port. Near Senor Frogs. There's also a great supermarket about 100 metres to the left as you're facing the ship. Great selection of wine.... but I digress!
Ponte Delgada - In the Solmar shopping centre.

Hope others post on this thread!!

Crazy not to cruise

Aruba - I found two places that had free wifi, one was at the hotel that has the boat shuttle to the beach near where the airport is I think it is.
Also at the marina where the shops are behind the cafes I got a signal just sitting on a bench.

When we go on our cruise in March & April I'll let you know where I find them.

Thanks for those so far.

Sue I did that from St. Maartens - I was really cruel and turned the camera so that my son and family could see the beach and all the people sunning themselves - can't repeat what he called me for teasing him! We had great reception sat in a bar at the back of the beach.

Think most of the bars behind the beach seemed to be offering free wifi when we were there - provided you paid $5 US for a lounger There were also various cafes in town doing the same.

How many of these hot-spots are free and free-from registration?

I've been to places such as Little Chef (oops that's something I shouldn't own up to) and was required to register with my email etc before getting on-line access. Needless to say, I didn't bother.

The one I accessed from on board ship in Antigua was completely free with no need for me to input any personal data.

I used my ipad all over the Caribbean (1-15 Feb) and never had to regsiter my email address, just log on and away you go.... BTW really good access in the beach bar in the middle of Holetown, Barbados.

In general, particularly in the Caribbean, look out for groups of locals using laptops, iPads etc in public places. Specifically, in Dominica outside the tourist centre opposite the pier.
