The Marco Polo and the Magellan are two examples in spite of being sold for development into Hotels.

R.I.P :(

Saw this news article this morning and was disappointed to see the Marco Polo was one of the affected ships. Had a smashing cruise on Marco Polo a few years ago sailing out of Cardiff Bay - literally less than an hour away. Great itinerary and good food/entertainment and excursions - I had always hoped to sail with Cruise and Maritime again but another casualty of covid I'm afraid :(

I knew the Magellan very well when it was the Holiday. We had designed and sold a large ten metre led sign which was installed on Deck 9 just above the elevators at the entrance to the casino. We flew it out to Denmark in a single engined Cessna and drove it up to Aalborg to install it in the early 1980s whilst the ship was being fitted out. On her first sea trial they found out that the centre of gravity was a metre too high and were loading tons of pig iron ballast to bring it down.

I have many photos of my time wandering around the ship and it was fascinating to see what was underneath the glossy veneers that were added later. It was Carnival’s first ship of the modern design with the winged funnel and was quite an extended financial venture for them. I had a few words with some of the Carnival executives who were checking her features.

“Nice ship you’ve got here” I said.

“Right now it’s the banks” they replied.

I visited her again a few months later just before she sailed off. The decor was very tacky. My parents did a cruise on her from Miami a few years later and I was pleased to hear that my sign was still working.

Sad to hear of her fate and I suppose one day the same will happen to Aurora and her other much-loved sisters. I don’t know how I shall cope with that news.

My dear old mum was a regular on Marco Polo when it was the Pushkin.
She loved it living in Gravesend.
Home to ship in half hour.
My brother would drop her and her husband off at the Tilbury ferry. A short river crossing and a short walk.
All things come to an end.
Empty vessels .. and all that
