Paying for Parking

Unread post by david63 »

Generally wherever possible I will try not to have to pay for parking but on occasions this is not always possible.

A while back I had to use an NCP car park where they ANPR installed to charge for the parking. Upon returning to the car park I dutifully went to the machine, entered mt registration number and paid the requested fee using my debit card.

Some weeks later I received a Parking Charge Notice saying that I had parked for longer than the time paid for and I was issued with £100 fine - needless to say I was not a happy bunny.

I immediately wrote back saying that I paid what the machine asked me to pay with a copy of the payment from my bank statement. Fortunately this was accepted and the notice was cancelled.

The moral of this tale is that if I had paid by cash then I would have had no proof that I had paid but using a debit card saved mt a large fine and from now on I will, wherever possible, pay by debit card.

I wonder how much trade is lost because parking is difficult or so expensive you're not going to hang around? Sometimes it defeats the object.
Personally I use Park and Ride whenever I can or the local bus service. Cheaper and less hassle.
I was taught to be cautious

A bus is something that you wait for at a "bus stop" and which then fails to arrive.

Back on the original point - I see quite a few people taking a photo of the parking ticket in their car as proof of payment.

Have a look at "Blackbelt barrister" on Youtube for interesting and informative videos about Parking Fines and lots of other things

Why can’t there be a universal app for parking? We have Ringo for parking in Edinburgh & I was shocked to discover I needed a different app to park in Aberdeen or Newcastle.
On another matter, I got a penalty charge for forgetting to pay for a trip through the Tyne tunnel so I decided to open a pre payment account & stuck £5 on it. I don’t often use the tunnel but thought it might save me in the long run (also you get a discount). The system allows you you to put more than one car on the account and so I put our daughter’s reg number in. The system then informed me that she had last used the tunnel at 3:24pm on April the 16th 2022. How does that sit with GDPR? I suppose it’s cheaper than getting Philip Marlowe to check if Gen Sternwood’s daughter has been up to no good in Gateshead!
