What you Town and City dwellers must remember is that in the days of yore, our winters were much colder, we had lots of snow, and it was the snow melt that filled the dykes. Unlike today with our milder winters, we now get a lot of rain and sometimes in excess. With the flood plains being built on and other meddling to the catchments, this leads to the dykes being filled, the flood plains unable to cope, and the resulting floods. I hope this helps you to understand a rural phrase. Class dismissed.

Just one thought though, if winters when Ray was a lad were so much colder, how come the snow was melting?

Nice try John, I will hazard a guess that because snow acts like a blanket, it melts from the bottom up.

Same here Stephen, but we have light rain although they did forecast a small chance of snow
On the bright side, a big willow and shrubs are starting to break into leaf at the bottom of the garden.
